SERVICE ASSESSMENT
A service assessor will come to your home, do an assessment, and discuss with you which level of service would be appropriate for your needs. At Blackstar, we offer three levels of service that can be tailored to your specific energy loss issues.
  • OUTDOOR An outdoor scan provides you with a general snapshot of your home’s thermal “health”. Each side of the house will be scanned from a distance, with areas of air exfiltration noted and scanned separately.

  • INDOOR An indoor scan is a more thorough inspection and gives specific information regarding areas of air infiltration into the home. Indoor scans include all living spaces, garages, and basements. Note: A thermal scan of attic space does require an additional fee and must be set up during assessment.

  • INTEGRATED An integrated indoor/outdoor scan will provide the most useful information for homeowners, identifying problem areas with even greater precision than either of the preceding scanning option alone.
THERMAL SCANNING
A thermal scan will be scheduled for a period of time at or shortly after dusk sometime within a week of the assessment date. Scans can be scheduled for other times of the day, however dusk, when the sun’s radiation isn’t artificially warming the external envelope of the home, is best.

The time it takes to perform an outdoor, indoor, or integrated scan will range in time from 20 to 60 or more minutes depending on the level of service purchased. Scanning will be done by an experienced thermographer who has been certified through the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI). The thermographer will do a thorough weatherization inspection of your home, concentrating on the areas of greatest concern that were noted during your assessment. For each thermogram, a corresponding digital visual light photograph will be taken to be used later on as a frame of reference in your report. The thermographer will record audio notes to be matched with individual thermograms. These notes will be used as a reference when assembling your report later on.

REPORT OF FINDINGS
After the scan of your home is completed, the thermographer will upload captured images into state-of-the-art analysis software. There s/he will review the thermograms, alternating the palette and temperature range in order to obtain the very best composition. Recorded notes and observations will be reviewed and documented. By far, this analysis phase is the most time intensive, requiring the thermographer to utilize his/her expertise in the interpretation and translation of thermal imagery.

Indoor and integrated reports can be upwards of 50 pages in length, with one image representing a page. As Energy Star partners, we are dedicated to finding ways to save energy in the workplace. For that reason, we prefer converting reports to pdf files and emailing them to our clients. However, if you would like a hard copy instead, one will be mailed to you upon request at no additional charge.
